Those of us who call Las Vegas home, have endured many slights to our neon encrusted oasis.  From the very top of the political arena (Barak Obama) to the mid-western travelers of the red states, the grumblings of a morally bankrupt city have been heard.  But, as the attempts to sully her good name fade into oblivion, Las Vegas smiles as she survives generation after generation, providing to those all the fun and fantasy she can.

Honestly, for us who have established a business here (Alter Ego Studio), we love to hear of the strange, interesting and fantastical.  We in the entertainment industry are always waiting for the Las Vegas story.  We quietly snicker when Prince Harry has a  brief but much maligned romp with our city walls.  We equally have a Cheshire grin when Las Vegas becomes and remains a swing state for the Republican and Democratic parties.

Las Vegas seems to be all things to all people.  The movie industry has embraced us as the place to start or end most of their films.  We are a mecca for Hollywood…a place academy award winners can sit next to the cast of The Hangover 3 on a level playing field.

Las Vegas is still not a place for kids…and we are ok with that.  It needs to harbor the big kids with their big tastes, big fantasy’s…and of course the big pool parties.

We at Alter Ego Studio are in constant salute (pun intended) to Las Vegas…she is our sister-in-arms…and she will always be the Sexiest Woman Alive (although Mila Kunis is a good choice too!)

Las Vegas - Alter Ego Studio Salutes

Las Vegas Hot ChicksWith the end of Summer fast approaching, we here at Alter Ego Studio and The Viewfinders realized we had not paid proper homage to our Bikini clad finer gender.  Las Vegas, of late, has enjoyed a resurgence of Summer Pool goers.  Ladies and gentleman from across the nation flock to the cathedrals of decadence to soak in the rays and bask in the glow of the of the LasVegas pools.

The V Crew here at Alter Ego Studio has the pleasure, throughout the season, to have unfettered access to the pool areas for a variety of shoots.  We know how lucky we are to see the sights and sounds that we do.  That is why we wanted to reserve just a small space on our Blog to say thank you to the beautiful ladies and celebrity skin that graces the front of our lenses.

Las Vegas = Alter Ego Studio

At least since the 20th century, many artists and architects have proportioned their works to approximate the golden ratio—especially in the form of the golden rectangle, in which the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio—believing this proportion to be aesthetically pleasing. A golden rectangle can be cut into a square and a smaller rectangle with the same aspect ratio. Mathematicians since Euclid have studied the golden ratio because of its unique and interesting properties. The golden ratio is often called the golden section or golden mean.Other names include extreme and mean ratio, medial section, divine proportion, divine section, golden proportion, golden cutgolden number, and mean of Phidias. -wikipedia.com

production still is a photograph taken on or off the set of a movie or television program during production. The photos were taken by studio photographers for promotional purposes. Such stills consisted of posed portraits, used for public display or free fan handouts, which are sometimes autographed. They can also consist of posed or candid images taken on the set during production, and may include stars, crew members or directors at work.

The main purpose of such publicity stills is to help studios advertise and promote their new films and stars. Studios therefore send those photos along with press kits and free passes to as many movie-related publications as possible so as to gain free publicity. Such photos were then used by newspapers and magazines, for example, to write stories about the stars or the films themselves. Hence, the studio gains free publicity for its films, while the publication gains free stories for its readers.

When shooting production stills, there is the possibility that your work may be turned into concept art for the next installment or possibly for use in the current advertisement of the production.  Alter Ego Studio is involved in many aspects of the Nevada film industry including shooting production stills, castings and first looks.  With all roads seemingly ending in Vegas for most films, we are fortunate to be exposed to many wonderful productions both on the major and Indie levels.

SLR v SLT

Are we shooting with the best gear available? That’s a question every professional has asked themselves. The debate between which camera technology is the best continues with SLR vs. SLT.

Digital single-lens reflex cameras (digital SLR or DSLR) are digital cameras that use a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera. -Wikipedia.com

Single-Lens Translucent (SLT) is a Sony brand name for cameras which have a mirror, but – unlike the one in DSLRs – it does not move, and it is semi-transparent, allowing the majority of the light to pass through to the sensor whilst reflecting a portion of it onto a phase-detection autofocus  sensor, this way allowing full time phase detection auto focus. -Wikipedia.com

Since there is no mirror or mechanical parts flipping one, the SLT camera will give you the fastest stills FPS and fastest video auto-focus. Due to the electronic viewfinder, you lose a third of the light entering the camera, therefore will get slighty lower ISO performance. These camera technologies are a close call in which one is more practical, but the victor goes to the SLT for any fast paced photography or video capture, due to the advantage of less mechanical parts speeding up the focusing process.

We at the studio were sick to our stomachs when we read this!  If we can get past all the dry heaves and swearing, we will tell you why we are upset.  Normally, we would not comment on this situation using this platform, but being that it directly involved photographers…

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

P.S.- Accept when taking pictures “with no apparent esthetic value.”

That’s right, the Long Beach pig…uh…er…police department has taken it upon themselves to disregard the constitution as a matter of standard department procedure.

The LBPD, detained a local news contributor for taking pictures “with no apparent esthetic value” as stated by police chief Jim McDonnell.

All hail the oppressors of civil liberties! That is sarcasm by the way.

It’s been a while since our last post!  Sorry for the delay, but end of summer has been busy and fun for us!  A couple of international excursions, plenty of location shoots and hosting industry parties at our studio.  Here are some photos from an ISES cocktail party we had at the studio earlier this month.  We will be back to our normal interesting blogging soon.

Late last week, news broke of parents suing a retailer and a photographer over pictures of model Haily Clauson that ended up on t-shirts.  The parents issue is that at the time of the pictures Haily was only 15 years old and the photos were “blatantly salacious” and may have violated child pornography laws.  The first two pictures are the ones in question.  Do they have a level of sexuality to them, yes.  Are they salacious or pornographic, no.  Should the photographer have used more restraint with a 15 year old subject, maybe.

This is not an first time model, this is an experienced model that has worked the runway for Gucci, Diane von Furstenberg, Elie Saab, Giambattista Valli, Donna Karen, and Oscar de la Renta.  At our studio, we know how important having the proper documentation can be, such as releases and user agreements.  Now, if the pictures had been published and forgotten would the parents be suing?  We doubt it.  So, who is really doing the exploiting here?  Is it the photographer or the parents that were present when these photos were taken?

Like most in our generation, we grew up on superheros.  One was greater than all the rest.  Superman!  What kid didn’t fly around with a cape pretending to save people.  Hell, I have a cape now that fits me!  So, when the first picture of the new superman was released this morning we could not wait to see it and make comparisons.  The new movie is just under two years from release and we are already excited!  What does this have to do with photography or our photography studio? Well, these are both professional photographs.  So, which superman do you like better?  Or are you withholding judgement for now?

OK, yes we saw our chance to express our opinion about the candy bar, and we took it.  But our inspiration was from the images of the Milky Way that yahoo posted yesterday.  Lately, running the Las Vegas studio has turned into a full time job for us, which makes us long for the days when we could venture out and take shoots like these more often.  These photographs are great, but there were a few more beautiful ones we thought were worth a look…

And these we don’t know for sure so we will leave them un-credited.
